WE HAVE ONLY RECOVERED 15% OF FORMER MINISTER OF PETROLEUM, DIEZANI'S LOOT - MAGU

The Acting Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, Ibrahim Magu, on Thursday, said only about 15 per cent of funds allegedly misappropriated by a former Minister of Petroleum Resources , Mrs . Diezani Alison -Madueke, had been recovered.
Magu, who said the commission was working with the United Kingdom on her case , noted that efforts were being made to extradite her back to Nigeria .
The anti -corruption boss, who spoke during a courtesy visit of the principal officers of the commission to The PUNCH Place , Magboro , on Thursday, vowed never to give up until all the money stolen from the country was recovered.
He said , “ We are working on the process of Diezani ’ s extradition . But we have to allow them ( the UK government ) because we are collaborating . There is the National Crime Agency and the Crown Prosecution Service in London, and our colleagues , the Department of Justice and the Federal Bureau of Investigation in America . We had cause to meet in London. I was there myself for about a week. We are working not only on the Diezani case ; but the Diezani case has become a test case .
“ It is even more notorious than the so -called Abacha loot because we have not seen anything yet . I ’ m sure what we have seen is not more than may be 15 per cent . I think it is going to be a long time . That is why sometimes I think we should appeal to the looters to return the loot. Come and tell the government , ‘ This is what I have stolen . ’ Since you have voluntarily complied with the instruction to bring back the loot, then the government will take a decision . I think it is the best way to go about it , otherwise , the monies would be wasted .
“ Diezani has a lot of people who are well connected , like ( Jide) Omokore who are international businessmen . They have private aircraft and you can’ t see any of them in Nigeria . They went and kept them in Ghana, some of them . But we are working with almost all law enforcement agencies in the world . They are all willing to work with us because what I told them is, ‘ As long as you have any ( claim ) of criminality in Nigeria , call us . ’
“ We will go after the criminals because we don ’ t wait for protocol . Delay is dangerous ; when you delay you will not see it. So , we are ready to cooperate with everybody and people have shown willingness. Last time I went to the international convention, they said Nigeria should show it experience. So , the whole world at the United Nations level wants to hear our asset recovery experience. ”
Magu noted that the National Salaries , Incomes and Wages Commission had been informed of the needs of the anti -corruption agency, saying there would soon be an upgrade of facilities .
He said the agency was also giving attention to the welfare of its workers to avoid undue influence or temptation in the course of their assignments.
The EFCC boss explained that the EFCC was making efforts to involve experienced lawyers in order to reduce the rate of loss of court cases .
Magu, who expressed resolve to kill corruption in the country, called for support and collaboration from Nigerians , saying corruption was the greatest problem of the country.
He said , “ I sometimes tell people, this rubbish called corruption was caused by my generation. It is our duty to remove it before the next generation, so that the next generation will have a better life.
“ We are going into massive campaign against corruption. We have seen some good results. People are beginning to change. We want to beg you , let us sustain the momentum . We all have the responsibility to do that. It is about our people and the future of this country. We should do the right thing and give away our today for the better life of the next generation. ”
The EFCC boss commended The PUNCH for its role in the anti -graft war and advised the media organisation to stay committed to responsible journalism .
The Director of Public Affairs , EFCC, Osita Nwajah , noted that the commission had put in place measures to ease the burden associated with public complaints.

FG, ASUU AGREE TO RESOLVE STRIKE AFTER 14 HOURS MEETING.

The Federal Government and the Academic Staff Union of Universities, after a 14- hour meeting which ended on Friday morning, issued a communique, giving the union a one- week ultimatum to get back to the government on the strike action .
The Minister of Labour and Employment , Chris Ngige, who highlighted the communique to journalists by 3. 30am on Friday, said the government had pledged itself to the contentious issues raised by the union .
Ngige said , “ To remind you , some of them are the funding of universities, earned academic allowances, staff schools, salary shortfalls , the issue of the Treasury Single Account among others . Most of these issues stem from the 2009 agreement and the 2013 Memorandum of Understanding that the government had with ASUU .
“ Government is a continuum . Most of these issues did not crop up during the Buhari administration. We inherited them . Based on our conclusions, the ASUU will consult with its members and revert to the government within one week. We expect them within one week. The meeting was very cordial. ”

D'TIGRESS NARROWLY BEAT MALI TO QUALIFY FOR WORLD CUP.

Nigeria ’ s national women’ s basketball team on Saturday narrowly defeated hosts Mali 48-47 in an explosive semifinal clash to qualify for the final of the 2017 FIBA Afrobasket Championship in Bamako .
D’ Tigress have thus qualified for the 2018 FIBA Women’ s World Cup in Spain .
It was a tough and low scoring match as both sides were equally matched in defensive abilities.
Nigeria were looking to go one further from their 2015 outing in Cameroon where they lost by a point to the hosts but with the Malian home crowd cheering on their team, the Nigerians made a lot of mistakes as they missed scoring chances .
Going into the match with a superior head - to - head against Nigeria – having beaten D’ Tigress in six out of seven meetings – Mali were full of confidence in the match but were very cautious against the attacking effectiveness of the Nigerians.
D’ Tigress took the first quarter 10-7 before extending their lead in the second quarter with a 13-5 win. But Mali came back strongly in the third and last quarters. They took the third quarter 17- 16 while the last quarter ended 18-9 in favour of the hosts.
WNBA star, Evelyn Akhator , was man marked by the Malians but Atonye Nyingifa came out tops in her place for Nigeria . Nyingifa raked in 11 points while Akhator provided 10 rebounds . Ezinne Kalu weighed in six assists .
For Mali , Meiya Tirera weighed in 15 points and six assists while Naignouma Coulibaly had 17 rebounds .
Overall, Nigeria converted 29. 79 per cent of their two points field goal while Mali accounted for 25. 45 per cent . Nigeria had more three points field goals as they converted 25 per cent against Mali ’ s 22. 22 per cent .
In the free throws, Mali converted 68. 42 per cent while Nigeria could only convert 52. 38 per cent. The Malians also led the rebounds chart having 52 against Nigeria ’ s 40.
Nigeria created 12 assists while Mali created 11 but Nigeria had eight steals and Mali had six.
As in their quarterfinal outing against Ivory Coast, the Nigerian bench was more effective against the Malians as they produced 14 points while the hosts managed seven from their bench .
The final of the competition holds today in Bamako.

SOLDIERS KILL 10 YEAR OLD BOY IN IMO MARKET DEMOLITION.

There was pandemonium in Owerri , the Imo State capital , on Saturday, when a 10-year -old boy, Somtochukwu Ibeanusi, was allegedly shot dead by military men from the 34 Artillery Brigade .
The soldiers were deployed to maintain law and order during the forceful demolition of the Owerri Main Market, popularly known as Eke - Ukwu Owerri , by the state government .
Many others were hospitalised owing to injuries sustained when the soldiers allegedly open fire as youths protested against the demolition of the market.
The father of the deceased , Isaiah Ibeanusi , said the military men shot his son at the back of his head and that he died instantly .
Ibeanusi, who addressed journalists , said the tragic incident occurred while he was trying to remove his goods during the demolition exercise , which was supervised by the army , police, Department of State Services, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps and Air Force.
He said , “ While I was trying to remove my goods from the shop, I was alerted that my son had been shot by the Army.
“ I quickly rushed to the scene but my son was already dead . He was shot in the back of his head . The soldiers that shot the bullet did not care , they quickly moved on . ”
An eyewitness identified only as Chika , who claimed to have witnessed the shootings, said several others , including an old man and a youth leader , Leonard Ebubeagu , were injured during the raid while many goods were destroyed .
President General of the Owerri Community Assembly , Felix Ngoka , faulted Governor Rochas Okorocha for approving the demolition of the market because of a subsisting injunction restraining him from carrying out the exercise .
When our correspondents visited the scene on Saturday , the road leading to the market was barricaded by security men.
A journalist , Chinonso Alozie , was attacked by the security officials and his gadgets seized .
The Army Public Relations Officer, 34 Artillery Brigade , Haruna Tarwai , denied the allegation , claiming that his men neither killed nor manhandled anybody .
Tarwai said his men were only deployed in the scene to protect officers demolishing the market.

DAD WILL BE HAPPY ABOUT NNAMDI KANU AGITATION - OJUKWU SON

Emeka Ojukwu Jr. , a legal practitioner and son of Igbo leader, Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu , tells BAYO AKINLOYE what he knows about Gen. Muhammadu Buhari’ s meeting with Ojukwu and why he disagrees with the President ’s statement that Nigeria ’s unity is not negotiable
W hat exactly transpired between your father, Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu, and Gen. Muhammadu Buhari ( retd. ) in 2003 on the issue of Biafra and the restructuring of the country ?
I didn ’ t attend the meeting . I was not privy to what happened . But the indices point to the unassailable fact that the meeting ( between Ojukwu and Buhari) held . Why I say so is , remember that Gen . ( Olusegun ) Obasanjo assumed power as a democratically elected president in 1999. I think the time of the meeting must have been the period leading to Obasanjo ’ s second term. At that time, there were people who felt he didn ’ t perform well. So , there was a build -up and upswell of political opinions to see what could be done either to change him or whatever . So , they must have met.
Not long after that, there was a one- million-man march involving my father , President Buhari and Chuba Okadigbo . When he ( Ojukwu) came back , he told me about the one -million-man march but he didn ’ t tell me about the discussion he had with the President . They were no strangers and you could not had a one - million-man march with someone you have not discussed anything with . In his life, the way he lived , my father always wanted peace for everybody . About the meeting holding, yes , it did. But as for the finer points of the discussion, I cannot tell you this was what was discussed or not discussed, because I didn ’ t attend that meeting. If I had attended that meeting, I could pointedly tell you offhand what was discussed . But I would never be in a position to say that the President is a liar .
On record, your father was the first person to agitate for the emancipation of Igbo people by declaring an independent state of Biafra . How would you situate that moment in history with the current agitation of the Indigenous People of Biafra and The Movement for the Actualisation of the Sovereign State of Biafra ?
The agitation of IPOB and MASSOB is a valid agitation . The only thing I hold against them is their methodology. But for somebody to fight for self -determination I do not see anything wrong in that. It is like a marriage; there are times the situation will be rosy and pleasant , there are times there will be some upheavals . So , we must give room for those things. No one should say those boys shouldn ’ t talk. They are allowed to talk . But what I am against or what I frown on is their taking over the road because when it comes to roads, there is what we call “ access . ” If a Yoruba man wants to go to Port Harcourt ( Rivers State ) or Aba ( Abia State ) , you should not try to block the road, saying you want to vent your spleen because of some certain grievances. You ’ re obstructing him and if you succeed in doing that, you ’ re proving that there is no government and there is insecurity .
If there is a need to demonstrate or do whatever , then they should go to a stadium , book the venue , go to the police to get a public permit to hold a demonstration and you can all stay in the stadium , have ( a protest by) candlelight and get the media to cover the protest – that ’ s enough of a message to pass across to the world . It is better than recruiting a group of young children from the universities , indoctrinating them and pushing them to get on the roads to do whatever they think they like ; acting that way doesn ’ t help anybody . Their agitation must be devoid of violence. Any agitation must be devoid of hate speech . The reality is that nobody has a monopoly of hate speech . Everybody should be civil in relating with their fellow men . We must eschew hate speech to avoid bad consequences .
President Muhammadu Buhari , in his Monday broadcast, stated categorically that the unity of the country is settled , not negotiable. How do you relate that to the call for an independent state of Biafra ?
I don’ t think the tone of finality in the President ’ s speech is right. I have always said Nigeria is a product – a child – of negotiations . It is a child of negotiations in that when they started the agitation for the country’ s independence — Zik ( Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe) from the Igbo side, Chief Anthony Enahoro from South -West , and ( Ahmadu Bello) the Sardauna from the North — they were all going to London. They had problems but they patched their differences and , ultimately , without firing a gunshot, the British government gave independence to Nigeria . For somebody to wake up and say ‘ there are no negotiations ’ is not in line with the fact that an agreement is susceptible to review and renegotiations. Since it is not really possible to see the future or what will happen in 50 years, agreements are subject to review and negotiations . An agreement over time requires reviewing or renegotiations . So , if we are all pleased with it , there will be no pocket of agitations or discontent . But the pocket of discontent and agitation is a throwback showing that we are having problems with implementation ( of the agreement to remain as a country) , thus calling for renegotiation. In that regard, it is important that everybody should be carried along .
What I don’ t like is a situation whereby the government sponsors people . As of the time they were convoking the last national conference , it was my view that the Federal Government should not pay the delegates . I suggested that each ethnic nationality should choose and sponsor a delegate to the confab; you submit your interest under a bigger umbrella; once all views are gathered , then we will harmonise them and look for the best way to implement them . The reason why we are having problems is that people believe that the constitution we are using was at no time agreed on . They feel that it was the military that gave us what we have now .
Do you think the restructuring of the country should be left to the National Assembly and the National Council of State as indicated by Buhari ?
It is a step in the right direction. What I feel is that the last regime that organised the 2014 national conference did not do enough. You cannot go to the market to buy all needed ingredients, cook a meal and not serve it. Delegates to the confab were assembled in Abuja for about four months with each paid N 4m . What was the problem in implementing their recommendations ? Why would anyone play politics with that by saying ‘ vote for me’ and the recommendations will be implemented ? But we are not God and things did not go the way some people expected . Maybe if the election result had gone their way, we would not have the situation that we have today . The will of God or the mind of God is not that of the people . Maybe the Peoples Democratic Party government felt that they would be there for the next 60 years. When that failed , you should expect that there would be a lot of frustration . Also , a lot of looted money linked to some people now might not have been accounted for if the previous government had continued .
Do you think your father , who first championed the cause of Biafra , would be proud of Nnamdi Kanu ’ s determination in seeking for an independent state of Biafra ?
Well, he’ d be proud . He was not a jealous person – he was always very free . If you remember exactly what he said : ‘ I hold the torch , but my problem is that I am looking around for a young man to pass on the torch . ’ So , if Nnamdi Kanu shows that he is the person that will bear the torch , I don’ t have any problem with that. But my problem with him is ( that) the language being used ( by him ) is not refined – the language is heating up the polity . I pray that the meeting the South - East senators had with him will ensure that caution is exercised in the language used . I am a party to that. In fact , that ( language used ) was the dividing line between the two of us – it started when I said ‘ don’ t insult people ’ and all that but he stuck to that . I didn ’ t want that to happen because I have a name to protect .
I think Nigerians should love one another and agitate within the confines of the law. I should also add that we know the history of Nigeria ; when did we start to feel bad about one another ? If we come to the conclusion that things were going on well until 1960 or 1963, then , why can’ t we go back to that point and start from there ?

PASTOR AND SIX OTHERS ARRESTED AFTER FINDING SOME BODY PARTS IN CHURCH.

A pastor in charge of Royal God ’ s Commandment Ministry International in Calabar, Mr . Tony Ekpe, has been arrested alongside six other members after a shallow grave containing fetish items and suspected human parts were exhumed in the church on Thursday.
Investigations into the suspected diabolical activities of the pastor commenced after a lady in the area complained that her daughter was missing .
While the police said the shallow graved contained fetish items, birds and some suspected human flesh , residents of the area alleged that the uncovered flesh were body parts of human beings .
Already , angry mobs burnt down the church located at No . 3 Okon Edak Street, off Atamunu Street in the Calabar-South axis of the Cross River State capital.
The state Commissioner of Police, Mr . Hafiz Inuwa , who confirmed the arrest of seven persons in connection with the items unearthed , said investigation, was ongoing .
He said , “ A matter was reported to us and the police swung into action. When they got there , the policemen saw some fetish things within the surrounding of the church and they discovered a shallow grave.
“ They dug it and they saw birds buried alive, close to the grave there was blood stains . They saw flesh which only the hospital can analyse . Seven people have been arrested including the said pastor of the church . ”
An eyewitness , Linus Ita , alleged that some corpses were exhumed from the shallow grave.
He said , “ The pastor killed a small child in the early hours of Thursday and that was what brought out his diabolic activities. Someone sighted him when he was digging the ground to bury the child . They discovered at least five corpses in the grave and other items .
“ Apart from dead bodies exhumed at the site of the incident, there were also woman’ s panties found at the place . The pictures of people who visited the place for assignment littered the ground after the place was brought down. ”
Another eyewitness , Mary Okoro , said on Wednesday , a lady had lamented that her child was missing , unfortunately some strange movements were noticed in the church at about 3am on Thursday.
“ It was that strange movement that gave the clue that something was not adding up in the church . At that point , some persons went to report the matter to the police that they suspected foul play around the church . That was how the grave was discovered, ” she said .
Although Okoro could not confirm the number of dead bodies exhumed from the shallow grave, she said the angry mob decided to burn down the church after they discovered that the pastor ’ s activities were fetish .

FG ASK COURT TO REVOKE NNAMDI KANU'S BAIL.

The Federal Government has asked the Federal High Court in Abuja to revoke the bail granted the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra , Mr . Nnamdi Kanu, who is being prosecuted along with others on treasonable felony charges.
The prosecution made this request in an application it filed before the court , which was also served on Kanu on Friday.
Saturday PUNCH had exclusively reported on July 22, 2017, that there were plans by the Federal Government to ask the court to revoke the bail granted Kanu on April 25, 2017.
The application seeking the revocation of Kanu’ s bail was released to journalists in Abuja on Friday by the Special Assistant to the Attorney-General of the Federation on Media and Publicity , Mr . Salihu Isah.
Kanu, had earlier in his application filed on July 1, 2017, urged the court to vary the conditions of the bail granted him by the court on April 25, 2017.
But the Federal Government hinged its fresh motion seeking the revocation of Kanu’ s bail on the grounds that the IPOB leader had flouted the terms and conditions of the bail.
In its fresh application , the Federal Government asked the court to revoke the bail granted Kanu and order his immediate arrest by the police.
The Federal Government ’ s counter-affidavit filed in support of the motion and deposed to by a litigation clerk in the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions pieced together Kanu’ s alleged acts of serial violation of the bail conditions imposed by the court .
The prosecution said instead of using the opportunity of his bail to attend to his health needs, Kanu went ahead to inaugurate a security outfit known as Biafra Security Service.
The prosecution said this constituted a threat to national security.
It recalled that in violation of the bail conditions , Kanu, held a rally at his residence in his hometown , Afara-UkwuIbeku in Umuahia , Abia State on May 26 and 27, 2017, with the said rally attracting a crowd exceeding 10 persons in violation of the bail conditions .
The prosecution said it attached video clips of the said events to the counter- affidavit as exhibits.
The counter-affidavit read in part, “ That the 1st defendant/applicant ( Kanu) is standing trial for alleged offences of conspiracy to commit acts of treasonable felony , treasonable felony and other related offences before this Honourable Court ;
“ That the offences for which he is standing trial are not ordinarily bailable;
“ That the court , notwithstanding , granted bail to the 1st defendant/respondent on health grounds on April 2017;
“ That among other conditions for the bail of the 1st defendant are as follows:
“ That he should not be seen in a crowd exceeding 10 people ; that he should not grant any press interviews, hold or attend any rallies ; And that he should file in court medical updates of his health status every month;
“ That the bail condition was perfected by the defendant/applicant which he is currently enjoying;
“ That rather than observing all the conditions , the 1st defendant/respondent in flagrant disobedience to the court order flouted all conditions given by the court ;
“ That the defendant held a rally at his residence in his hometown , Afara-UkwuIbeku in Umuahia, Abia State ;
“ That the said rally with a crowd exceeding 10 persons was captured in a video published on the 1st June 2017, and circulated throughout the length and breadth of Nigeria and beyond through the Internet platform of YouTube ;
“ That the YouTube video was downloaded and is attached to this affidavit and marked NK1;
“ That the 1st defendant equally incited his members to disrupt , disallow and boycott elections in the South -East states , starting with the Anambra State gubernatorial election scheduled for November 18, 2017, if the Federal Government failed to hold a referendum for the realisation of the state of Biafra ;
“ That the bail granted the defendant/applicant was to enable him to go and take care of his health and not for any other purpose ;
“ That instead of the 1st defendant to use the opportunity to attend to his health needs, he has in furtherance of the offence charged, inaugurated a security outfit known as ( the) Biafra Security Service ;
“ That his action is a serious threat to ( the ) security of this country as well as a threat to national unity .
“ That from the deposition in the affidavit in support of this application , it is clear that the essence of the bail granted the 1st defendant/applicant is defeated;
“ That it will serve the best interest of justice to grant this application as the 1st defendant/respondent will not be prejudiced . ”
The Federal Government , therefore , sought the rearrest and commitment of Kanu to “ custody pending trial ” .
Kanu had argued in his earlier application that the bail conditions were excessive while maintaining that by virtue of Section 36( 5) of the 1999 Constitution , he was presumed innocent.
The charges against the defendants included conspiracy and treasonable felony by allegedly conspiring among themselves to broadcast on Radio Biafra agitation for the secession of Republic of Biafra from Nigeria .
They were also accused of improper importation of goods and illegal possession of firearms.
Among the charges was also the publication of defamatory matter by allegedly referring to the then President - elect , Maj -Gen . Muhammadu Buhari ( retd . ) , and now President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria , as “ a paedophile , a terrorist, an idiot , and an embodiment of evil” in a broadcast on Radio Biafra on April 28, 2015.
The trial has been adjourned until October 17.

YOU ARE SICK AND TIRED -FAYOSE.

The Ekiti State Governor , Ayodele Fayose , has said he stands by all he said about President Muhammadu Buhari on his ill health and therefore has no apology to make to anyone about it.
The Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party’ s Governors Forum advised the President “ to resign so as to look after his health because he is sick and tired. ”
Resumption: Buhari to work from home, writes to N ’ Assembly
Fayose spoke on Wednesday during a meeting with political office holders at the Government ’ s House in Ado Ekiti .
He said , “ If not for our efforts , Buhari wouldn’ t have returned now . Buhari is sick and tired and even his physical appearance portrays this and he needs to go home and rest.
“ Today , they have cancelled the Federal Executive Council meeting. You cannot hide the truth forever , it will reveal itself someday . You cannot continue to deceive Nigerians.
“ Every word that has come out of my mouth, I have no apology for them . President Buhari was indeed in coma and one of those who visited him said his recovery is a miracle . That shows that he was indeed very sick. Let Buhari go back to Daura and rest, don’ t send him to early grave. ”
Fayose , however , denied reports on the social media that he vowed to commit suicide if the President came back alive from his medical vacation to the United Kingdom .
He attributed the rumour to the work of miscreants spreading misleading reports about him on the social media .
“ How can I commit suicide because of an old man ? Such are from miscreants on the social media. Let me tell you expressly , why would I commit suicide ? I cannot commit suicide because of my mother . Even if they are burying my mother now , I will cleverly stay away from the grave so that I won ’ t fall into it. I can’ t commit suicide because of Buhari. I never said that and will never make such statement . ”
Fayose said pressure from him and the civil society groups including the ‘ Resume or Resign Movement , ’ was responsible for the “ forced return of the President to Nigeria . ”
“ The pressure from me and many other Nigerians made the President to return home. They have been treating this matter under the table forgetting that the life of a president is an open book that can be read by everybody and anybody .
“ Not until civil societies and people like us started making noise . You can’ t be our President without us knowing what is happening to you .
“ For me, the President went to coma on July 6. Today , they can come back and organise rallies and all that attested to the fact that the President recovered by miracle which we are glad about .
“ We are happy that he is back . But when you look at the President physically , you will see that he is emaciated , tired and weak . You don’ t have to be president at all costs , when you are tired, you go home.
“ I stand by all I have said about the President . We are glad he is back , but don’ t over flog him . I am not a sycophant and I stand to speak for Nigeria . Somebody must be able to speak on behalf of the poor masses. This was how they deceived us during the time of Yar ’ Adua .
“ I am not a hypocrite and I will never be one. This country deserves a very healthy person . The office of the President is not for a sick man. The President is tired and should be allowed to resign and go and rest. “
The governor also took a swipe at those saying Buhari was old enough to be his father .
“ Buhari is not old enough to be my father . My mother is older than Buhari , not to even talk about my father , he can only be my uncle . I am close to 60. ”
Asked if he would honour the invitation if invited to see the President , the governor said that could be misinterpreted, adding that he would prefer to watch from a distance.
“ I cannot go and greet the President if invited and the reason is that such action would be misinterpreted to be something else . So , it is good for me to wish him well from a distance and be able to tell Nigerians the truth .
“ I don’ t want to talk about 2019 but I want to tell you that Nigeria needs a president that is agile and strong . The job is too much for an individual that does not have what it takes
“ We wish him well and we want him to recover but the President should throw in the towel , resign and go home.
“ They said he would come back and resume in his office , he resumed in his office , they said rats have taken over his office . Now , they said he is working from home ; tomorrow, they would say he is coming from the bedroom. All these stories are ending up in a make -believe. ”

JAMB RELEASES NEW CUT OFF MARK FOR TERTIARY INSTITUTIONS AND ALSO LIFTS BAN ON POST UTME. SEE NEWS BELOW.

JAMB released new cut-off marks for tertiary institutions

- The institutions are however at liberty to raise theirs above JAMB's requirement

- JAMB also lifted the ban on Post-UTME

The Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has released the cut-off marks for Nigerian tertiary institutions while also lifting the ban for post UTME examination.

Premium Times reports that these decisions were taken at the 2017 Combined Policy Meetings on Admissions into Tertiary Institutions in Nigeria which ended on Tuesday, August 22.

Minimum cut-off marks for tertiary institutions are:

Universities were pegged at 120

Polytechnics and colleges of education were pegged at 100

Innovative enterprising institutes was pegged at 110

Institutions were however allowed to raise their cut-off marks above JAMB’s stipulation.

It was also agreed that admissions into public degree awarding institutions for the 2017 UTME examination will end on January 15, 2018 while private institutions will end theirs on January 31, 2018.

It was also revealed that decisions on first choice candidates by universities will be expected to be complete October 15 and second choice candidates will end on December 15.

The rest of the students seeking admission will be available for other institutions till the January closing dates.

Ishaq Oloyede who is the registrar of JAMB said a Central Admission Processing System (CAPS) will be used to streamline admission processes among institutions based on challenges associated with the former approach.

He said: “All over the world, there is agitation for dynamic educational policy,” he said. “JAMB only admits for National Diploma, not Higher National Diploma; so why should we use the same requirement for ND and BSC, that is unreasonable parity.”

“We should not be sentimental in fixing our cut off mark; we need not over-dramatise issue of cut off mark.”

He noted that the number of those seeking admission to study agriculture had dropped while those for medicine and health science rose.

He also spoke about illegal admissions saying the new process allows the registrar to approve all candidates.

“About 17,160 students were admitted without JAMB across institutions in Nigeria.”

The Federal Government explained that all tertiary institutions were at liberty to conduct screening for candidates seeking admission into any school.

BARCELONA SUES NEYMAR FOR BREACH OF CONTRACT. DEMANDS €8.5M

Barcelona are suing Neymar for a breach of contract after the Brazilian left the club for Paris Saint-Germain earlier this month.
Having already said they would refuse to pay €26 million in bonus payments Neymar was due to receive this summer, Barcelona are now attempting to claim back money already paid to the player.
The Catalan club said on Tuesday they believe they are owed money that Neymar received as part of a renewal bonus when he signed a new contract last year, in addition to €8.5m in damages plus interest.
The amount of the renewal bonus the club are seeking was not immediately made public.
In a statement released on Tuesday, Barca said they had passed the complaint on to the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF), having first filed the lawsuit in a Barcelona court on Aug. 11.
"FC Barcelona have sent a claim to be made against Neymar for breach of contract to the RFEF for it to be passed on to the French Football Federation [FFF] and FIFA," the statement read.
"In the lawsuit, the club demands the player return the already paid sum for his contract renewal because he has not fulfilled his contract; €8.5m in damages; and an additional 10 percent in interest. The club also requests that PSG subsidise the amounts in the event that the player cannot take responsibility."
Neymar put pen to paper on a new five-year deal at Camp Nou last October, and in addition to the bonus he was paid at the time, he was due to receive €26m more this summer.
However, after his world-record €222m transfer to PSG went through, Barcelona spokesman Josep Vives confirmed the club would not be making the payment because Neymar had not fulfilled his contractual duties.
"There were three conditions -- one, that the player didn't negotiate with another club before July 31; two, that he publicly expressed his decision to fulfil his contract; and three, the payment was to be made on Sept. 1 to ensure he didn't go to another club," Vives said.
"With these criteria not met, the club will not pay the renewal bonus. The money is no longer with a notary but back with the club."
Neymar did not publicly say he was considering a move to PSG until Aug. 3, the day Barcelona terminated his contract and he signed with his new team.
Barcelona's claim comes just days after Neymar blasted the club's board.
"I do have something to say: that I am disappointed with them [the Barca directors]," Neymar said after PSG's win over Toulouse on Sunday.
"I spent four years there and was very happy. I began happy, spent four years happy and left happy. But not with them. For me, they shouldn't be in charge of Barca. Barca deserve much better, and everyone knows this.
"To see my former teammates unhappy makes me sad also, because I have many friends [there]. I hope that things get better for Barca. That they return to the team they were and become one that can compete with the others."

CONFUSION IN PORTHARCOURT HAS MAN WHO RAPES EIGHT YEAR OLD GIRL ESCAPES PRISON.

THERE was confusion in Port Harcourt , the Rivers State capital, on Monday when members of the public learnt that Ifeanyi Dike, the man who allegedly raped , killed and removed vital organs of an eight-year - old girl, Victory Chikamso, had escaped from the police custody.
The father of the victim , Dr . Ernest Nmezuwuba, who was at the State Criminal Investigation Department when the suspected murderer and ritual killer escaped from police custody, said Dike took advantage of the darkness within the SCID ’ s premises to escape .
Nmezuwuba, who spoke during a Port Harcourt - based radio ’ s programme , added that the suspect was able to escape because one of the policemen on duty on Saturday night identified as Johnbosco had unlocked the handcuffs for Dike to write his statement .
The father of the deceased explained that Johnbosco did not handcuff the suspect after he ( Dike ) finished writing his statement , adding that the suspect fled while he was about to be taken into the cell .
Nmezuwuba said , “ We were there with the suspect in handcuffs. When we got to the state CID , there was no light in the entire State CID . I wrote my statement with candle; imagine a whole state CID ( without light ) . Then Johnbosco removed the handcuffs from the suspect’ s hands for him ( suspect ) to write his statement .
“ At a point, the boy ( Dike ) said he was thirsty and Johnbosco said I should buy pure water for him and I asked him (‘ John; are you crazy ? Is something wrong with you ? Why would you ask me to buy water for a person that killed my daughter ? Why would I buy water for a
ritualist?’ And I told Johnbosco that it was none of my business.
“ Some policemen were at the gate with guns while we were at the charge room writing statement . After we finished writing our statements , Johnbosco called the IPO to go and put the suspect in the cell . The suspect was not handcuffed at that time .
“ They did not walk up to a pole when I heard hold am , hold am ; he has escaped. Whether he jumped the fence or not, I cannot say because the entire place was dark; it was between 7. 30 and 8pm ( Saturday night) . I now told Johnbosco that you know what you are doing.
“ They ( policemen ) came out with torchlight and checked under the cars parked there . Then I saw the DCP , I mean the Deputy Commissioner of Police and he said ; what nonsense is this ? He then asked after Johnbosco and he was told he ( Johnbosco ) was inside . The DCP then said that they should handcuff both his hands and legs. ”
Nmezuwuba expressed disappointment in the police, accusing them of playing game with a heinous crime against humanity, even as he vowed that he would never allowed it to be swept under the carpet .
He said , “ My brother , I cannot understand this country ; this must be a planned game and I must fight it to the end . They have to provide that suspect . The Rivers State Police must provide him while Johnbosco should remain in detention.
“ This incident has proven the kind of country we are living . What is going to happen in this particular matter ; honestly speaking , heaven will hear it . The whole world will hear it. ”
On his relationship with Dike , he said , “ The boy ( suspect ) is related to me; we are from the same village. He killed my daughter inside his room . Ifeanyi Dike’ s landlord is my in-law and also his own in-law . The landlord was arrested and the same day , they released him ( landlord) . The name of the landlord is Pius Nwoko . ”
Dike, who had allegedly defiled, killed and removed the vital organs of eight- year -old Chikamso, was caught by a local vigilante , who immediately handed him over to the police on Saturday .
However, the state Commissioner of Police, Mr . Zaki Ahmed, who was visibly sad and angry over the development, explained that the suspect escaped under the cover of the night and promised that the police would soon arrest him .
Describing the incident as an individual negligence , Ahmed stressed that the police had deployed human and material resources towards ensuring that the suspect was apprehended .
The CP said , “ What I am saying is that it was an individual negligence that caused it. The escape happened in the presence of the complainant ; that is the parent of the girl . The boy ( suspect ) escaped under the cover of the night.
“ But we are making every effort , every move and by the grace of the Almighty God , within a short time , he will be arrested. We are not relenting . We know that this is a serious problem; it can happen to anybody.
“ We are not relenting and by the grace of God , we will get him arrested. It is too bad it happened , but it is one of those things. Sometimes , things can happen this way.
“ We have moved a lot of resources ; both human and material resources , to ensure that the culprit is arrested. We call on the people to confide in us if they have any useful information. I will act on it. ”

Blood pressure often increases as weight increases . Being overweight also can cause disrupted breathing while you sleep ( sleep apnea ) , which further raises your blood pressure .
Weight loss is one of the most effective lifestyle changes for controlling blood pressure . Losing just 10 pounds ( 4. 5 kilogrammes) can help reduce your blood pressure .
Besides shedding pounds, you generally should also keep an eye on your waistline . Carrying too much weight around your waist can put you at greater risk of high blood pressure
Men are at risk if their waist measurement is greater than 40 inches ( 102 centimetres while women are at risk if their waist measurement is greater than 35 inches ( 89 centimetres) .
These numbers vary among ethnic groups. Ask your doctor about a healthy waist measurement for you .
Exercise regularly
Regular physical activity — at least 30 minutes most days of the week — can lower your blood pressure by four to nine millimeters of mercury ( mm Hg ) . It ’ s important to be consistent because if you stop exercising, your blood pressure can rise again .
If you have slightly high blood pressure ( prehypertension ) , exercise can help you avoid developing full- blown hypertension . If you already have hypertension , regular physical activity can bring your blood pressure down to safer levels .
The best types of exercise for lowering blood pressure include walking , jogging, cycling , swimming or dancing.
Strength training also can help reduce blood pressure . Talk to your doctor about developing an exercise programme .
Eat a healthy diet
Eating a diet that is rich in whole grains , fruits , vegetables and low - fat dairy products and skimps on saturated fat and cholesterol can lower your blood pressure by up to 14 mm Hg .
This eating plan is known as the Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension diet. It isn’ t easy to change your eating habits , but with these tips , you can adopt a healthy diet:
Keep a food diary
Writing down what you eat , even for just a week , can shed surprising light on your true eating habits . Monitor what you eat , how much , when and why .
Consider boosting potassium . Potassium can lessen the effects of sodium on blood pressure . The best source of
potassium is food, such as fruits and vegetables , rather than supplements. Talk to your doctor about the potassium level that’ s best for you .
Be a smart shopper . Read food labels when you shop and stick to your healthy- eating plan when you ’ re dining out , too .
Reduce salt in your diet
Even a small reduction in the sodium in your diet can reduce blood pressure by 2 to 8 mm Hg .
The effect of sodium intake on blood pressure varies among groups of people . In general , limit sodium to less than 2, 300 milligrammes ( mg) a day or less .
However, a lower sodium intake — 1, 500 mg a day or less — is appropriate for people with greater salt sensitivity , including : African - Americans, anyone age 51 or older , anyone diagnosed with high blood pressure , diabetes or chronic kidney disease .
Limit alcohol intake
Alcohol can be both good and bad for your health. In small amounts , it can potentially lower your blood pressure by two to four mm Hg .
But that protective effect is lost if you drink too much alcohol — generally more than one drink a day for women
and for men older than age 65, or more than two a day for men age 65 and younger . One drink equals 12 ounces of beer , five ounces of wine or 1. 5 ounces of 80- proof liquor .
Drinking more than moderate amounts of alcohol can actually raise blood pressure by several points . It can also reduce the effectiveness of blood pressure medications.

SEE WHAT US PRESIDENT DONALD TRUMP SAID ON TWITTER

Just as the world was getting over Trump's "Covfefe" mistake, the President of the United States made another error on Twitter, this time saying the country will "heel" instead of "heal" and he made the mistake twice.
Trump was tweeting about the recent protests and counter-protests across America when he made the error on Saturday. Thousands of people had turned up to counter an alt-right "free speech rally" on Saturday, and as the demonstration winded down, Trump posted what was supposed to be an encouraging tweet.
He wrote: "Our great country has been divided for decade, but it will come together again. Sometimes protest is needed in order to heel, and heel we will!"
He quickly deleted the tweet and replaced it with another which still had lots of errors. He wrote: "Our great country has been divided for decades. Sometimes you need protest in order to heel, & we will heel, & be stronger than ever before!"
As expected, Twitter users called him out for the mistake. Even the Merriam-Webster Dictionary took a jab at him for his spelling error.

WTF!!! NBC BANS OLAMIDE'S "WO" AND SOME OTHER SONGS. CHECK TO SEE THE LIST OF SONGS BANNED.

The Federal Government via the National Broadcasting Corporation, has made firm on its decision to ban Olamide’s anthem and hit track of the moment, Wo.
This is coming a few days after the Federal Ministry of Health had openly aired it displeasure regarding visuals to Wo . In its own opinion, the video portrays a bad message that encourages second-hand smoking.
However, NBC did not stop there as they also went further to ban four other hit tunes, Wavy Level by YBNL boss Olamide; FALL and IF by DMW boss, Davido and also Living Things by 9ice.
You would recall that Falz had earlier called out music acts who entertain lavish lifestyles and also fraud. In view of Falz comment, 9ice’s “Living Things”, was the major talking point.

PRESIDENT BUHARI TO WORK FROM HOME.

President Muhammadu Buhari on Monday wrote to the two chambers of the National Assembly to intimate the federal lawmakers that he had resumed work after spending 104 days outside the country .
The Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity , Mr . Femi Adesina , disclosed this in a statement on Monday .
Adesina said the communication was in line with the constitutional provision that required Buhari to notify the lawmakers of his return .
“ In compliance with Section 145 of the 1999 Constitution ( as amended) , I write to intimate that I have resumed my functions as the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria with effect from Monday , August 21, 2017, after my medical follow -up in the United Kingdom, ” Adesina quoted Buhari as stating in the letter dated August 21.
Adesina later told reporters that the letter to the National Assembly was dispatched at few minutes after 11am .
“ Some few minutes past 11am , the President signed the letter notifying the National Assembly of his resumption. A copy has been sent to the Senate President and a copy has been sent to the Speaker , House of Representatives , so the President has resumed , ” he said .
On what his resumption meant to Nigerians, the presidential spokesman said , “ It means the President they voted into office , who has been serving them and who was indisposed for some time and who came back on Saturday , is ready to continue with the work he has been doing. ”
On Nigerians reaction to the President ’ s broadcast that his message was not explicit enough, Adesina said , “ That broadcast was just one step of many steps that are going to be taken in the days and weeks and months ahead ; so you can’ t expect that everything will be said in one day. ”
Meanwhile, Buhari who returned to the country on Saturday will be working from his official residence , and not his office , for now .
A Presidency source , who spoke to State House correspondents on condition of anonymity, attributed the development to ongoing renovation in the President ’ s office .
The source did not disclose how long the renovation will last.

Kalu stated that Buhari transmitted the letter to fulfil the constitutional requirement .
The National Assembly is on recess till September 19.
However, Kawu explained that the transmission of the letter, being an administrative matter , did not require the National Assembly to be in session.
He said , “ The President is back ; he has resumed and I am here to deliver the declaration to the National Assembly.
“ Any constitutional worker of the National Assembly will take the letter and process it for onward transmission to the Senate President and the Speaker.
“ What is important is for Mr . President to write and say ‘ I am back . ’ He has just done that and that is all . ”

Saraki , who was said to be in the UK as of Monday , made the confirmation on his Facebook wall .

HOLLYWOOD ACTRESS LUPITA NYONG'O CELEBRATES HER FATHER'S VICTORY IN KISUMU COUNTY, KENYA ELECTION.

Hollywood actress Lupita Nyong'o 's father, Hon Peter Anyang Nyongo was sworn in today, as the Governor of Kisumu County, Kenya.
Professor Nyongo got 261,972 votes, representing 63% of the total votes cast, ahead of closest challenger and incumbent, Jack Ranguma in the Kisumu County governorship election.
To celebrate the victory, the Oscar winner penned a letter to her father, listing the ten things her told her when she was a little girl. Her post and more photos below...
"Today is the day my father gets sworn in as the Governor of Kisumu County in Kenya. I thank all those who voted for him and wish him the very best as he embarks on this new journey of socio-political representation," she writes
To celebrate this day from afar, I reflect on the 10 Things My Daddy Told Me When I Was A Kid That Gave Me Confidence:
1. You are smart: I took this to mean both that I was dressed well (We Kenyans say "smart" for "well-dressed"), but also that I was intelligent. It always made me feel special and valuable.
2. It will be OK: He said this whenever I was sad with the little burdens of my childhood (a fight with my friends, a broken doll, a lost favorite piece of clothing). He also said this when I was concerned with the big burdens of his adulthood (detention without trial, house arrests, caught in tear gas during violent riots). Daddy said this to me as he held me close and I always felt a sense of comfort and security from him. I knew he would do all he could to make my life safe and that he was doing the same to make the country better for all of us.
3. You can do anything: Daddy never EVER made me feel limited by my gender. He supported me when I did things that my society thought un-ladylike, like whistling, dressing like Kriss Kross, and even climbing trees in my adulthood. He was my first example of what feminism looks like on a man.
4. Do whatever you want to do; just do it to excellence: Dreaming out loud was something he encouraged. He loved listening to my adventurous and sometimes unrealistic and romantic ideas. He did that for all of his kids. Together with my mom, my father taught me to dare to imagine an ideal world and go about making it a reality.
5. Knowledge is power: He ALWAYS reads and he is a walking example of how the power of an education never comes to an end. He has taught me that learning is the best way to stay young, beautiful and relevant. A free mind is stronger than a free body.
6. Show me: My Daddy loves to learn from his children. He is not afraid to admit what he does not know, and admitting I am ignorant of things has saved me from a lot of unnecessary embarassment. Not knowing isn't a crime. Refusing to learn is.
7. Consider the other side: there is always two sides to a coin. Being able to identify the other side of an argument makes yours stronger. It also makes you more empathetic.
8. You must stand up for what you believe in: This is a fundamental lesson from my father. He lives by it. It is why he serves: To literally make the world a better place. I know I have to do the same. Good people need to do more to bring balance, because the bad people sure are busy these days!
9. Very Good! 'A' Minus: This was his way of saying that I did well, but also jokingly reminding me that there is always room for improvement. It's about not congratulating yourself too much or berating yourself either.
10. Daddy loves baby: He has said this to me all my life. A reminder that he loves me, yes, but also that I will always be his little girl. It is heartening to remember as life gets more and more adult, that we all start off with the innocence of a child and the pure love that comes with it.
Daddy, congratulations! Baby loves
